ENEM Mathematics

Brazilian National High School Exam (Exame Nacional do Ensino Médio), Mathematics and its Technologies section. Heavily contextualized problems set in real-world situations rather than abstract statements.

Exam Format

Questions

45 multiple-choice questions with 5 options each.

Duration

5 hours on the second day, shared with the 45 Natural Sciences questions (90 questions in total).

Scoring

Scored by Item Response Theory (TRI), not by a raw count of correct answers. TRI weighs each item by difficulty, discrimination, and the chance of guessing, so two candidates with the same number of correct answers can receive different scores.

Calculator

No calculator allowed. Electronic devices are sealed for the duration of the exam.

Study Strategies

  • 1Understand what TRI rewards: consistency. Getting easy and medium items right matters more than landing a hard one by guessing, because an unlikely pattern of answers is treated as noise rather than skill.
  • 2Treat reading as part of the maths. ENEM questions are long and set in real contexts, so most of the difficulty is extracting the relationship from the text before any calculation begins.
  • 3Prioritize the recurring high-frequency content: percentages, ratio and proportion, rule of three, first- and second-degree functions, plane and solid geometry, basic statistics (mean, median, mode, reading charts), and financial mathematics.
  • 4Plan the shared five-hour block. Mathematics sits alongside 45 Natural Sciences questions on the same day, so decide your split in advance rather than discovering it during the exam.
  • 5Build estimation skills for a calculator-free exam. Many items can be resolved by checking the order of magnitude and eliminating alternatives that cannot possibly be right.
