GRE Quantitative Reasoning

The math measure of the GRE General Test, taken for graduate and business school admission: 27 questions in two sections on arithmetic, algebra, geometry and data analysis, with an on-screen calculator.

Exam Format

Questions

27 questions in two sections, 12 in the first and 15 in the second. Four types: Quantitative Comparison, multiple choice with one answer, multiple choice with one or more answers (no partial credit) and numeric entry. Some questions come as data interpretation sets on one table or graph. The content is arithmetic, algebra, geometry and data analysis, generally no higher than a second course in algebra, with no trigonometry and no calculus.

Duration

47 minutes: 21 minutes for the first section and 26 for the second, about 1 minute 45 seconds per question. The whole GRE General Test, with two Verbal Reasoning sections and one Analytical Writing task, takes 1 hour 58 minutes. Analytical Writing comes first, and the Verbal and Quantitative sections follow in any order. The test is offered year-round, at test centers and at home.

Scoring

130 to 170 in one-point increments. The score reflects the number of correct answers and the difficulty of each section, and wrong answers cost nothing beyond the missed point. For test takers from July 2022 to June 2025 the mean was 157.62, with a standard deviation of 9.90. Scores are valid for five years.

Calculator

An on-screen calculator with the four operations, square root, memory and parentheses is available in both Quantitative sections. It follows the order of operations and can transfer its display into a single-box numeric entry answer. Figures are not necessarily drawn to scale.

Study Strategies

  • 1Rebuild arithmetic and algebra first: integer properties, fractions, percents, ratios, exponents, equations and inequalities sit inside nearly every question, the geometry and data ones included.
  • 2Master Quantitative Comparison: simplify both quantities the same way, never multiply by something that might be negative, and test 0, 1, a negative number and a fraction. If two values give different results, the answer is that the relationship cannot be determined.
  • 3Read the answer format before you solve: a square box means select one or more answers with no partial credit, and numeric entry wants the exact answer, or a fraction in two boxes, unless the question asks you to round.
  • 4Keep the calculator for long decimal arithmetic in data interpretation sets. Mental math and estimation are faster for most questions, and the calculator cannot help with algebra.
  • 5Train at the real pace of about 1 minute 45 seconds per question, use Mark and Review to skip and return within a section, and answer every question, since a blank earns nothing.

How Math Zen Helps

Math Zen's GRE Quantitative path has 47 subtopics across arithmetic, algebra, geometry and data analysis, including a Quantitative Comparison generator in the GRE's four-answer form, rate, work and mixture word problems, special right triangles, arcs and sectors in degrees, data displays, counting and probability, most of them with typed numeric answers. It does not have the select-one-or-more-answers format, and its problems are mostly one or two steps, so pair it with ETS's official practice tests for timing and for multi-step questions.
