GMAT Focus Quantitative Reasoning

The Quantitative Reasoning section of the GMAT Focus Edition, the business school admission test: 21 problem-solving questions in 45 minutes on arithmetic and algebra, with no calculator and no geometry.

Exam Format

Questions

21 multiple-choice Problem Solving questions on arithmetic and elementary algebra applied to problems, many of them word problems: percents, ratios, number properties, equations, inequalities, rates, work, mixtures, interest and profit, plus descriptive statistics, counting and probability. Geometry was removed with the Focus Edition, and Data Sufficiency moved to the Data Insights section.

Duration

45 minutes, about 2 minutes 8 seconds per question. The whole exam has three 45-minute sections, Quantitative Reasoning (21 questions), Verbal Reasoning (23) and Data Insights (20), 2 hours 15 minutes in all plus an optional 10-minute break, in an order you choose. You can bookmark questions and change up to three answers per section.

Scoring

Each section is scored 60 to 90, and the three count equally toward a Total Score of 205 to 805; every total ends in 5. The section score depends on how many questions you answer, whether they are correct and how difficult they are. Scores are valid for five years. The Focus Edition has been the only GMAT since February 1, 2024.

Calculator

No calculator in Quantitative Reasoning: the questions are built for arithmetic by hand. An on-screen calculator is available only in the Data Insights section.

Study Strategies

  • 1Make arithmetic fast by hand: keep fractions as fractions, cancel before you multiply, know common percent and fraction equivalents, and estimate when the answer choices are far apart.
  • 2Turn every word problem into an equation before computing: add rates, not times, in work problems, track the pure substance in mixtures, and multiply factors for successive percent changes.
  • 3Treat number-property questions as a search for examples: one counterexample rules out a must-be-true option, and one example confirms a could-be-true option. Test odd and even, negative values and zero.
  • 4Spend your study time on arithmetic, algebra and word problems only: geometry is no longer tested and Data Sufficiency belongs to Data Insights.
  • 5Pace at about 2 minutes per question, guess and bookmark when a question passes three minutes, never leave the last questions unanswered, and save the three answer edits for errors you can actually find.

How Math Zen Helps

Math Zen's GMAT Focus Quant path has 32 subtopics on arithmetic, algebra, statistics and probability and leaves geometry out, as the exam does: rate, work, mixture, interest and profit word problems, number properties, percents in context, rational expressions, sequences including recursive ones, and overlapping sets. It is fundamentals practice rather than a GMAT simulator: its problems sit below the hardest adaptive GMAT questions and it has no Data Insights practice, so add GMAC's official practice exams for timing and difficulty.
