AP Statistics
College Board's Advanced Placement Statistics exam on the course revised for 2026-27: five units, from exploring data and probability to inference and regression, tested in 42 multiple-choice and 4 free-response questions.
Exam Format
Questions
42 multiple-choice questions with four answer choices each, including two sets of three questions (one on probability and distributions, one on regression), and 4 free-response questions worth 10 points each: Question 1 on formulating questions and collecting data, Question 2 on analyzing data and interpreting results, Question 3 on inference (a hypothesis test or a confidence interval) and Question 4 across several practices and content areas. Multiple-choice unit weights: Exploring One-Variable Data and Collecting Data 20-30%, Probability, Random Variables, and Probability Distributions 15-25%, Inference for Proportions 15-25%, Inference for Means 10-20%, Regression Analysis 10-20%.
Duration
3 hours: multiple choice 1 hour 30 minutes, then free response 1 hour 30 minutes. The 2027 exam is on Tuesday, May 11, 2027, in the afternoon session. From 2027 the exam is fully digital in the Bluebook app, free response included, and it is the first exam on the revised course.
Scoring
Scored 1 to 5. Multiple choice and free response are 50% of the score each, so each free-response question is worth 12.5%. Credit and placement for a given score are set by each college.
Calculator
A graphing calculator with statistical capabilities is expected in both sections; from 2027, nongraphing calculators are not allowed, even those with statistics functions. The Desmos graphing calculator is built into Bluebook, and reference material with formulas and tables is provided.
Study Strategies
- 1Make inference your core: Units 3 and 4 are 25-45% of the multiple choice and free-response Question 3 is a full test or interval, so for every procedure practise the same four parts: name it, check its conditions in context, compute, and conclude in context.
- 2Know which procedure fits: z for proportions, t for means, one sample, paired data or two samples, and chi-square for two-way tables. Choosing the wrong one costs more points than an arithmetic slip.
- 3Practise interpretation as much as calculation: the statistical practices weight Interpret Results at 25-35% of the multiple choice, so say what a p-value, a confidence level, a slope or r squared means in the words of the problem.
- 4Study the revised course, not an old review book: combining random variables, the geometric distribution, departures from linearity, the goodness-of-fit test and inference for slopes are gone, while investigative questions are new.
- 5Rehearse at the 2027 timing in Bluebook conditions: about 2 minutes per multiple-choice question and 22.5 minutes per free-response question, with your graphing calculator or Desmos for every probability and test.
How Math Zen Helps
Math Zen's AP Statistics path follows the five units of the revised course across 21 subtopics: study design and sampling, data displays and summary statistics, probability, binomial and normal distributions, sampling distributions, intervals and tests for proportions and means including two-sample procedures, chi-square tests, residual plots and r squared, with critical values printed in the problem as the exam's tables provide them. It checks answers, not written reasoning, so pair it with released free-response questions; simulation, dotplots, named experimental designs and computer regression output are not covered yet.
