ACT Math

The mathematics section of the ACT, the US college admission test: 45 multiple-choice questions in 50 minutes on number and quantity, algebra, functions, geometry, statistics and probability, and applied multi-step problems.

Exam Format

Questions

45 multiple-choice questions, each with four answer choices: 41 are scored and 4 are embedded field-test questions that do not count. Preparing for Higher Math makes up 80% (Number and Quantity 10-12%, Algebra 17-20%, Functions 17-20%, Geometry 17-20%, Statistics and Probability 12-15%) and Integrating Essential Skills 20%. At least 20% of the questions also count toward Modeling.

Duration

50 minutes, about 67 seconds per question. The core test of English, math and reading takes 125 minutes. Remaining national test dates for 2026-27: December 12, 2026, then February 27, April 10, June 12 and July 10, 2027.

Scoring

Math is scored from 1 to 36 based on the number of correct answers, with no penalty for wrong answers. The Composite is the average of English, math and reading, rounded to the nearest whole number; science is optional and no longer counts toward it. A separate STEM score averages math and science.

Calculator

A calculator is allowed on the whole math section, and every problem can be solved without one. Four-function, scientific and graphing models are allowed unless prohibited; calculators with a computer algebra system (CAS), such as the TI-89, TI-92, TI-Nspire CAS, HP Prime and Casio ClassPad, are banned. Students testing online have the Desmos graphing calculator built in. No formula list is part of the description: ACT assumes you know the basic formulas but does not require recall of complex ones.

Study Strategies

  • 1Train the pace from the start: 45 questions in 50 minutes leaves about 67 seconds each. Wrong answers cost nothing, so answer every question, and since you cannot tell which 4 questions are unscored field-test items, treat every one as if it counts.
  • 2Spread your preparation across all five Higher Math categories: Algebra, Functions and Geometry each carry 17-20%, Statistics and Probability 12-15% and Number and Quantity 10-12%, so no single strand decides the score. Matrices, vectors and complex numbers sit inside Number and Quantity and are worth a few quick points.
  • 3Practise multi-step problems in context: Integrating Essential Skills is 20% of the section and covers rates, percentages, proportional relationships, area, surface area and volume, and at least a fifth of all questions involve building or interpreting a model.
  • 4Memorize the basic formulas before test day: ACT assumes you know them, including area and volume, the Pythagorean theorem, slope and distance, the trigonometric ratios and the rules for exponents and logarithms. Complex formulas are not required, so put the time into using the basic ones quickly.
  • 5Practise with the calculator you will use on test day: Desmos is built into the online test, and a paper tester must bring a permitted model without CAS. Then take ACT's free official full-length practice tests, digital or paper, under timed conditions.

How Math Zen Helps

Math Zen's ACT Math path draws on 82 subtopics across all five Preparing for Higher Math categories and the essential skills (ratios and rates, percentages, fractions, unit conversion), including matrices, complex numbers, vectors, trigonometric graphs and expected value. It uses the app's general problem templates rather than ACT-style questions, and most problems are single-step, so pair it with official ACT practice tests for multi-step modeling questions in context.
